When projector lamps operate at higher temperatures than specified by the manufacturer, it substantially reduces expected lamp life and will result in premature lamp failure.
The main reason for overheating is failure to service projectors regularly. In the average corporate office environment projector filters should be replaced on a quarterly basis, but the frequency should be increased to monthly if the projector is in a dusty environment.
Another sure way to overheat your projector lamp is to block the air intake and or fan exhaust. This occurs often when projectors are installed on incorrectly designed aftermarket ceiling mount brackets.
Like many bulbs, the projector lamp is a delicate object, albeit much more expensive than your average household bulb, so it is important to ensure your projector lamps last as long as possible. The main contributing factors to ensuring extended lamp life are as follow;
• Impaired Airflow:
Failing to keep your projector filters clean can be very costly. The “change your filter” warning light or message from your projector may be more appropriately interpreted as: “Pay attention, you are about to start pouring money down the drain!” Why? Because heat is a natural bi-product of any operating electronic circuit and more so in a projector where the lamp produces a substantial amount of heat by itself. Heat is the mortal enemy of projectors.
Dust and particles build up in the air intake filters on projectors and start to obstruct the airflow. Without proper air-flow to cool the projector, operating temperatures will rise above safe levels. Many of the components in a projector will not operate properly and will fail sooner if the operating temperature in the projector stays above specified levels.
Projector bulbs, individual LCD panels as well as the light filters and any signal processing boards can all be adversely affected by excess heat. And these items are not cheap to replace.
Dust build-up on filters is a primary cause of increased heat, which means that the air filters in a projector must be cleaned and replaced at regular intervals. In a confined space installation, filters must be cleaned and replaced more frequently, as dust accumulates very quickly. The best and most cost-effective way to protect your projector investment is to keep those filters clean, and make sure the projector is well ventilated. Even though projector manufacturers can design a good cooling system, all of that hard work can easily be undone by improper installation and maintenance of a projector. The hot air has to go somewhere. Make sure your projector is always installed or positioned in such a way that allows air to flow freely over and through it.
To get the most performance out of your projector, always ensure that:
1. Airflow through a projector is its lifeblood. Impaired airflow will result in lamp failure and/or other projector component damage. Keep the filter clean!
2. Projector air filters must be cleaned on a regular basis. At least quarterly, depending on the environmental conditions.
3. Vacuuming the projector’s air filters is not an efficient way to clean them. Filters should be replaced and all air passages cleaned with pressurised air.
4. Portable and installation projectors require adequate space around them for airflow. Be sure to check your owner’s manual and follow their recommendations.
5. NEVER use an LCD projector in the same room as fog / smoke machines. The fog fluid can deposit and burn on both the lens and LCD panel causing damage that is exceedingly expensive to fix. If you must use fog, use only video projectors with sealed optical systems (DLP) and liquid cooling.
6. Do not operate projectors in a room while you are using aerosol paints or glues for construction. If possible, keep the projector out of the room until the vapours are completely dissipated.
7. High altitude and thin air make it harder to cool projectors. Make sure you provide greater ventilation of your projector at high altitudes.
• Handling your projector lamp:
Never touch the projector lamp because your fingers have natural oil on them. The oil deposits cause the projector lamp to overheat due to hot spots forming and will result in premature failure. Only touch the metal housing.
• Let the projector lamp cool:
One of the main reasons why portable projector lamps may need replacing more often is when users do not allow the projector lamp to cool before they move the projector or switch it back on again. Many projectors power down on their own so do not move the projector whilst in this mode. If you have an older projector model, you might have an on or off switch for the projector lamp and a separate on or off switch for the machine. In this case, switch the projector lamp off first and once that has powered down, then switch the projector off.
Similarly, do not move, shake or bump the projector whilst the projector lamp is still switched on. They are very sensitive and movement could cause the projector to blow or shorten its life.
NEVER pull the power cord out whilst the projector is in operation or whilst cooling down after having switched the unit off. Only when the fan stops is it safe to remove the power cord.
• Save projector lamp hours:
Most modern projectors nowadays have what is called an economy, eco-mode or whisper mode. This uses less brightness from the projector lamp meaning the projector lamp will last much longer (as much as 1000 hours more) so do not use more brightness than you need. This is by no means an exhaustive list of techniques that we employ to ensure the longevity of your projectors, but it does include the main reasons that a projector lamp may have a shortened life.
